Eli

I wanted to share some things about Eli.
Back in April, the library had a jar full of jellybeans for kids to guess how many there were. Well Eli had the closest guess. There were over 1500 jellybeans and he was only 8 off! That is some good guessing. So he won a book and the whole jar of 1500 jellybeans. He took them to school to share with his classmates, which was good because we certainly didn't need that many hanging around here!

He recently got his Wolf badge in Cub Scouts. Way to go!

And last week he got glasses. That was probably inevitable, seeing how many people in his extended family wear them. Poor kid couldn't see the board in class, but now he can. And he looks pretty cute too!

Happy spring

Happy Easter, a little late I know. The pictures were on the camera, the camera went to school with Joe, the kids kept me busy....all the usual excuses. Anyway, wanted to show off my cute little girl. She loves pretty dresses and thanks to Granmama she had a lovely one for Easter.

I tried to find her a cute little hat, but apparently those aren't in style anymore, because I couldn't locate one. I made her a cute little headband instead. And a matching clip for Taryn, because she has a matching dress. But didn't get pictures of them together....not yet anyway. We had a fun family dinner. I made a bunny bread.

Carissa made "deviled chicks".

The kids hunted plastic eggs in the yard and then later turned it into dodge ball.

Taryn had her 1st birthday. We had a party at the park. Alice was fond of the party hat, so I took a picture. Reminded me of a picture I have of me when I was little.

Congratulations to Joe! He passed his comps and will graduate from his master's program in May. Yeah... the job hunt has begun. He has put in lots of applications/resumes, and keeps finding new places to apply. The waiting to hear back is not a lot of fun.

Peyton is my Orange Crush

Peyton Manning is a Bronco! Who'd have ever thought it. I am not a die-hard Bronco or football fan, but I do enjoy the NFL. I have liked Peyton Manning as a quarterback for many seasons and was so sad for him to miss all of last year. And now he is a Denver Bronco. I am way excited and I would venture most Bronco fans are. (Sorry you won't see me Tebowing). I am not placing bets on the Broncos winning the Super Bowl or anything, but I am looking into trying to find a game to go to that isn't on Sunday. Maybe pre-season. Should make this next season fun to watch! Go Manning and the Broncos!

Yeah Eli!

Congratulations to Eli and his brain bowl team. They competed a couple of Saturdays ago and they got 2nd Place! They won every round they played in, except the last one, which came down to the very last question! It was very exciting! They were Columbine A team, but could have been called the Marler team since half of it was Marlers: Ayden, Jayson, and Eli! (What can I say, Marlers have smart kids!)

Snapshots

What? Another month has gone by? How does this keep happening? Oh right, I have 3 kids, a husband that works 2 jobs and is working on his master's degree. Life just keeps happening and time keeps on ticking....
What's new with me? 10-Minute Trainer! Joe and I got it as our gift for each other for Christmas, and I must say I really like it. I really do have 10 minutes a day to exercise. You can do more if you want, but I haven't found more yet. Plus the work outs kick my butt and after 10 minutes I can hardly take anymore. But that means it's working right? I have been doing for 4 weeks and I still get sore. I am sore right now! I like feeling like I am doing something active everyday (ok, 5-6 days a week). It's great. I am not training for a marathon, and I don't have a 6-pack (yet...), but I am doing what I can, which is lots better than nothing. So I am going to endorse this product (anybody want to pay me for this endorsement? haha) and recommend it to anyone who has a hard time finding the time to exercise. To me, it is worth the $ it cost.
Joe is on his last class of his master's degree. It is pretty exciting! And a little scary, because I don't know what might happen this summer after he graduates. He will start looking for new jobs and who knows. He does have to pass comps first, which is in a couple of weeks. Its a FOUR DAY TEST. Yuck. Glad I don't have to do it. I am sure he will do fine. As long as he can find a quiet place to actually do what he has to, which will be researching and writing. He probably won't be at home much those days.
Kids are great. Eli is doing awesome in school. He is very smart. He is on the Brain Bowl team (a bunch of fourth graders, and 2 third graders, Eli being one of those third graders). The competition was supposed to be last weekend, but it snowed and they postponed it. It will be next month. He has surprised himself at how much he knows. I believe he gets a lot of it from all the reading he does.
Simon is lots of fun. Currently into all things weapons. I guess this is innate in some boys. I remember my little brother being able to turn anything into a gun. Sticks, toys, even pieces of bread. I have mulled the idea of signing him up for Karate, but I am not sure if that would be wise. Sure he would love it, but should he know how to do some of those things he pretends to do? He never wants to grow up. He is always telling me how he wants to stay a kid forever, and mostly he wants to live with me forever. I sure hope that changes, although not too quickly. And I wish I was still a kid somedays too.
Alice is learning to talk a lot more these days. It is very helpful in our communication when she uses words. Sometimes, she says sentences I don't understand, but she tries. She loves to dress up and play pretend. Sometimes she nuzzles up to me and meows. Is this normal for a 2-year old? I guess she learns lots from her brothers. She also loves to do my hair, and wear her tutu and dance. She is a princess through and through.

The Lincoln Tunnel ate our bus...aka Fabulous NYC

While we were visiting my parents, they so kindly agreed to watch our kids, and also my brother's son, so Joe and I and my brother Josh and his wife Erin could all take a trip to NYC. We left Wednesday morning (Dec 27) and were back Thursday night (Dec 28), so it wasn't very long, but it was fun! We took the Megabus (very affordable way to get there and fairly comfortable). We stayed a the Hotel Verite in the Gramercy area (also very affordable hotel, were able to actually get a room with 2 queen size beds), and very convenient to traveling by subway (we were able to catch a couple of different lines within a couple of blocks of the hotel).

We went to the Metropolitan museum of Art, which was very cool and huge. We only saw a small fraction of all they have of course. We went to Times Square. Saw where they were setting up stages and where the ball drops for New Years. Don't know why anyone would try to drive through Times Square!

We went to Rockefeller Center and to the top of the rock. Amazing view! (Josh and Erin who have also been to the top of the Empire State building said Top of the Rock was better). Loved seeing the ice skating rink and huge Christmas tree, and where they tape the Today show, and other things we see on TV.

We walked up 5th Avenue past St. Patrick's Cathedral and all the fancy stores with their Christmas decorations and window displays. There were so many people!

One of the best things was eating waffles! That's right. You can kind of see the wafel truck in this picture, the yellow cart thing there in the middle that is not a taxi. This was THE wafel place (I can spell, but this is how they spell Belgian waffles). Won Throwdown with Bobby Flay wafel truck. Amazing! We ate them twice, they are that good. And their special Spekuloos spread is to die for. Consistency of peanut butter, but gingerbread flavor. Yummmmm. I wish I could have some now. If you go to NYC, you must find the wafel truck! We had a really fun time. We will have to go back and get downtown and see a show and all that!

Oh and when it was time to catch the bus back to DC, we ended up standing in the cold waiting for 2 hours because the Lincoln tunnel ate our bus! They told us it was somewhere in there, but we never found out because the 7:30 bus came (we were supposed to go at 6pm), and we got to get on it. As we drove out of Manhattan, we saw how backed up the tunnel was and I guess the 6, 6:30, and 7pm buses were all in there somewhere. At least we got home. Guess that is traffic in NYC!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Here are a bunch of pictures from our trip to my parent's house in Virginia for Christmas. We had a fabulous time, going to museums and being with grandparents. My Grammy and Grandpa Bob were there too. And we got to spend time with my brother Josh and his wife Erin and their son Andrew.

4-generation picture!

(This is the George Washington Masonic Memorial)

They had a cool Christmas and train display at the Botanic Gardens.
